Celebrating Women’s History Month: Fitness Trailblazers Who Changed the Game

March is Women’s History Month, a time to honor the incredible women who have shaped industries, broken barriers, and inspired future generations. In the world of fitness, women have played a crucial role in revolutionizing how we train, move, and view health. From leading the aerobics craze to redefining strength, these fitness pioneers have left a lasting impact. It was hard to select only a few, because every day we come across countless women who are making their marks big and small on countless fitness lives. But, the ones we picked to showcase have inspired us in little ways throughout our fitness journeys.

Jane Fonda: The Queen of Aerobics

In the 1980s, Jane Fonda brought fitness into living rooms everywhere with her high-energy aerobics videos. Her workout tapes became some of the best-selling VHS tapes of all time, making fitness accessible to millions. Fonda’s influence helped spark a movement where women embraced exercise not just for aesthetics but for health and empowerment.

Bev Francis: Breaking Strength Barriers

When it comes to strength training, Bev Francis shattered stereotypes. A former powerlifter and bodybuilder, Francis challenged the notion that women couldn’t be strong. She competed in bodybuilding when the sport was still male-dominated, proving that muscle and femininity can coexist. Her impact continues to inspire women in strength sports today.

Denise Austin: The Fitness Motivator

Denise Austin has been a household name in fitness for decades. Through her TV programs, workout DVDs, and books, she has motivated people of all ages to stay active. Her upbeat and accessible approach to exercise made fitness feel welcoming, especially for women who were new to structured workouts.

Adriene Mishler: Making Yoga Accessible

In the digital age, Adriene Mishler has transformed yoga with her popular YouTube channel, Yoga with Adriene. Her philosophy of “finding what feels good” has made yoga more approachable for people of all fitness levels. She continues to empower women worldwide to embrace movement for both physical and mental well-being.

The Legacy Continues with IFTA-Fitness

Women continue to break new ground in the fitness world, whether as elite athletes, personal trainers, or advocates for body positivity. Their impact is undeniable, shaping the way we view health, movement, and strength.

At IFTA, we are proud to be part of this legacy as a woman-owned business led by Carter Collins. For years, IFTA has been empowering fitness professionals—both women and men—through education, certification, and training. Just as the trailblazers before us have paved the way, we continue to support the next generation of fitness leaders.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s take a moment to appreciate these trailblazers and the many women who continue to inspire change in fitness.
